It’s that time of year again where little ghosts and ghouls start coming out…the time that those of us with food allergies start dreading…another Halloween. If you’re anything like me, you find it difficult to see all that delicious candy in the store, and know that you can’t eat it.

I recently found out that those of us with multiple food allergies CAN have some of that Halloween candy! Did you know Smarties (yes, THOSE Smarties from your childhood) are gluten-free, vegan and peanut and tree nut-free? In addition, Smarties are free from most major allergens (with the exception of Bubble Gum Smarties, which have soy lecithin). But you won’t find milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts or wheat in Smarties at all! I don’t know about you, but with all my food allergies, Smarties is one of the very few processed foods that I can actually eat. In fact, Smarties is so concerned with food allergies that they have a special page on their website just for allergen info. I love companies who actually care about those of us with food allergies, and make every effort to keep us informed – this is one of the reasons #IAmASmartie!

I was so thrilled to find that Smarties is available at my local Walmart, right in the Halloween candy section. And the price?

With Halloween coming up, I created some tips for handling food allergies around the holiday:

1. Always keep allergen-free treats on hand. I always have Smarties in the house, not just as a quick pick-me-up, but also because some of my daughter’s friends have food allergies. I know that Smarties is safe for them, and it’s nice to be able to offer them something after I’ve checked with their parents.

2. If you or your child have food allergies, bring some Smarties with you to parties. You won’t feel so isolated, and it will give you a treat to eat while everyone else is munching away. Likewise, if you know of someone else at the party with food allergies, check with them to see if you can bring some Smarties so they’ll be able to eat something.

3. If you have a friend with food allergies, bring them some Smarties the next time you go over to their house after you’ve made sure they don’t conflict with any of their allergies. They’ll appreciate the gesture and your thoughtfulness.

4. Pass out Smarties on Halloween. Not only are the economical (only $1.98 at Walmart!), but you’ll know that you’re keeping kids with potentially life-threatening allergies safe!

We were fortunate enough to go to a premiere of Real Steel, the new Dreamworks movie coming out October 7th. I had seen some online previews for it and it looked interesting, but I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I knew that it had Hugh Jackman and I was really hoping to see him with his shirt off excited to see him in a role like this.

The movie is rated PG-13 and stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie, a washed-up boxer around the year 2020, when robot boxing is at its peak of success. Hugh travels from town to town gambling money he doesn’t have, with creditors always lurking around the next corner to get their payment. He finds out his 11-year old son was left motherless, and figures out a scheme to take him for the summer to make a lot of money, before signing over all his parental rights to his ex-girlfriend’s sister.

Newcomer Daniel Goyo plays Max, and does an amazing job gripping at your heartstrings as a kid who just wants to be loved, but with his dad’s fighting spirit. Max travels around with Charlie in the somewhat shady backyard robot boxing circles until Charlie manages to program a bot he found in a junkyard. Together, Charlie and Max take this bot to championship level and establish a loving relationship in the process.

I have to say, the fight scenes with the robots are amazing and so intense. I found myself having to look away as I watched Atom, Charlie’s & Max’s robot, in battle after battle. It was edge-of-your-seat stuff here, and you really don’t have any idea how things will end up until the very end. And yes, Hugh takes his shirt off thankyouverymuch.

The rating reflects the profanity in the movie, and the robot fighting might be more than some young kids can handle. We really loved this movie and can’t wait to go back and see it in the theaters again.
